If you have a jar of change and want to change your coins to cash, you’ll be wondering, “Where can I find free coin counting machines near me?”

Cashing in your loose change is a good way to get some extra money. Unfortunately, a lot of places charge you for cashing in your coins and the fees can be pretty high. In today’s post, I’ll cover places where you can cash in your coins for free or for cheap.

What will I learn?

If you are looking to exchange your coins for bills, then try these places. Below, you can access free coin counting and exchange services.

Many banks have coin counting machines. Some banks don’t provide coin-counting machines, but they will accept rolled coins (pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters separated and rolled into a stack) for cash. In that case, you will need to count and roll the coins yourself, but you can still get bills for your coins.

Members can have their coins exchanged for free, but non-members will usually need to pay a fee. So, if you have some coins you want to cash in, then I would recommend calling your bank to see if they will do it for you. If you are an account holder, they will usually provide a coin exchange service for free.

Here are some banks where you can exchange coins for cash for free if you’re a customer:

Like banks, some credit unions will provide free coin exchange services to customers. Non-customers may also be able to get coins exchanged at some credit unions.

Here are a couple of credit unions that offer coin exchange services:

QuikTrip is another place where you can cash in your coins. There are more than 900 QuikTrip locations, so you could exchange your coins at your local QuikTrip gas station.

You can find QuikTrip stores in the following states:

You can also get free air for your tires at all QuikTrip locations and buy dry ice there as well.

Okay, so the above options are great if you want to cash your coins for free, but I have even more options for you.

Some retailers have coin counting machines, which allow you to exchange coins for cash.

Basically, you pour your coins into the machine, and it will count them. These machines will spit out any coins that they can’t identify, which can include foreign coins, damaged coins, and non-coins. You can put those coins in again, and sometimes that can get it to register the coin. These machines are pretty easy to use, and you can cash in your spare change when you’re at the store.

Now, it’s important to note that coin counting machines at these retail stores are, usually, not free.

Most stores that offer machines feature Coinstar kiosks. These are popular coin counting machines, and you’ll find its kiosks in stores across the country.

Coinstar charges a fee of 11.9% for exchanging your coins for cash.

That’s not free, but it’s not too expensive either.

For example, if you had $10 worth of coins, then you would pay just $1.19. Coinstar machines offer a convenient way to trade coins for bills, and you can find these machines at a lot of stores. So, you could cash in your coins when you’re at the grocery store doing your shopping anyway, rather than having to go out of your way to head over to the bank.

Below, I’ve listed stores that have coin counting machines.

Please note though that just because I’ve listed a retailer below – like, say Walmart – it doesn’t mean that you’ll find a coin counting machine at every single Walmart store.

Yes, the Walmart store near you may not have coin counting machines, and that sucks (you have plenty of other options though, so don’t worry!), but in the next town over Walmart may indeed have a coin counting machine. I haven’t visited every single one of the 4,743 stores that Walmart has throughout the United States, so I can’t confirm that every single store has a machine. That same principle applies to every one of the retailers that I have listed below.

Not all of a retailer’s locations are going to have a coin counting machine. Some will, and some won’t. So, as to not waste your time, I would highly recommend that you call your local store BEFORE you head down there, to ask if they have a coin counting machine at that particular location. That way, you won’t waste a trip to the store. If your local store does have a coin counting machine, then you can head on down there and cash in your coins.
